In class today we discussed the numerous rallies that have been held. Since I often do not read the newspapers I found the rally featuring Glenn Beck. I chose this one because this past summer was the first time I lived with my parents since I moved to Purdue my Freshman year. As time passed over summer I finally found my daily routine, one of which involved watching Glenn Beck's talk show with my mom and discussing his points throughout commercials and after the program. This surprised my mom because it is not often that you can find me listening to a political show or the news. My point is not to discuss the fundamentals of our government today but to discuss the importance of charisma in a political leader, public figure and anyone who presents speeches.
This was the primary reason I was so interested in Glenn Beck's program, his charisma is present from his vocal enthusiasm to the creative nature of his program. It is very apparent in the clip I placed above. One thing that I do remember is listening to Robert Dallek's speech last February reviewing Obama's first year as President. Dallek stressed that Obama lacked charisma. He stated that this greatly hurt the public's opinion. He also gave the example of Reagan and how Reagan was extremely charismatic which is one of the reasons he was such a popular president. Both of these examples show how important a politician's charisma is to his presidency. Click here you would like to read more of Robert Dalleks speech. Also you can find his question and answer session from his speech I viewed last February here
In the end I chose this clip because Glenn Beck is one public figure who discusses politics that I can actually listen to. It demonstrates the importance of charisma in leaders and I believe more politicians looking to strive a higher position should focus more on this aspect of the job. As Maura stated in lecture, C-SPAN must use wide shot angles, etc. even in this clip he involves his audience and that is apparent.
